Life on board Hurtigruten

Informal Life On Board

The first thing you’ll notice on board any of Hurtigruten’s 12 ships is the relaxed atmosphere. Hurtigruten likes their guests to feel at home. They want you to be relaxed, so there’s no need for formal wear on board the ships. The local Norwegians who journey up and down the coast with Hurtigruten don’t dress up for dinner, so neither should you!

The same authenticity extends to the entertainment. Who needs glitzy cabaret performances when nature’s greatest light show, the Northern Lights, are just outside the window? The optional excursions are the entertainment, bringing you closer to the landscapes, wildlife and local communities.

A Haven of Relaxation

On a Hurtigruten voyage, you don’t sacrifice comfort for authenticity. Each ships offers a wide range of cabins, all designed as havens of relaxation. Cabins on the newly refurbished ships sport modern Scani-chic design and also luxurious expedition suits for those looking to travel in style.

On some of the ships, you will have the chance to relax in the outdoor hot tub or in the sauna, or work out in the fitness rooms overlooking the stunning scenery outside. The perfect way to de-stress!

On Board Shopping

All ships feature a shop selling local products, souvenirs, knitwear, books, postcards, stamps and toiletry essentials in case you’ve forgotten something.

Norway’s Coastal Kitchen

Hurtigruten’s chefs are passionate about quality local produce and will create three-course meals or lavish buffets for Hurtigruten guests that centre around locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. On the Norwegian coastal routes, fish and seafood are abundant and especially fresh in the winter season. When your ship docks, the chefs disembark to select the finest catch from the fishermen on the quayside. You’ll also be treated to local delicacies like cured lamb from Hellesylt or roast reindeer from Finnmark, homemade cloudberry jam, or aquavit ice cream from a local dairy.

On Hurtigruten ships you’ll find a la carte, set menu and buffet dining options, serving a wide range of fresh Nordic cuisine. There’s also a cafeteria serving drinks and snacks. New and refurbished ships boast a bakery and bistro serving local snacks and hot comfort food.

Reading Pleasure

Many of the ships have a small library on board, allowing guests the opportunity to read up on the areas they will be visiting, learn about Norwegian history and culture, or just pick up something interesting for a leisurely read.

Social Lounging

After a busy day of activities and excursions, the lounge provided the perfect way to unwind. Sink into a comfy armchair or sofa with a hot drink (there’s a wide range of beverages available) and soak up the magnificent views of the fjords. This part of the ship serves as the social hub of the ship – a place where you can mingle and share stories with fellow travellers, local passengers and crew. You’ll also find some cosy nooks where you can relax and read a book or plan your next day’s adventures.

After dinner, retire to the lounge bar, where you can sample some artisan beers and spirits. Try a shot of Arctic aquavit, a Lyngen Alp vodka or a Mack beer on tap. And while you’re chatting, you may even see the Northern Lights.

Travel You Way

Hurtigruten offers 3 fare options for you to choose from, based on your preferred style of travel:

With the Basic option, you’ll have access to all of Hurtigruten’s essential services at the lowest price. This means you can select your cabin category and enjoy full board set-menu dining. The Basic option offers less flexibility than the other options, so your cabin number will be assigned to you at check-in and your dining time will be allocated to you once you board.

The Select option has been carefully crafted to offer guests those services that are most important to you. In addition to the essential services, you can have your choice of cabin (on voyages departing from Bergen) and you can enjoy full-board dining at your preferred dining time (subject to availability). Included in this package, you will be able to stay connected on board with access to complimentary Wi-Fi. You’ll also enjoy complimentary tea and coffee whenever you want.

The Platinum package offers you the ultimate way to discover the Norwegian coast in style. There will be a special Norway’s Coastal Kitchen welcome basket with champagne waiting for you in your cabin. A full drinks package is included with your full-board dining experience, and you can also choose to enjoy speciality dining in the a la carte restaurant every night if you wish (not available on MS Lofoten, MS Vesteralen or MS Spitsbergen). As part of the premium service, you get private airport transfer to and from the ship in Bergen, Trondheim and Kirkenes, complimentary water daily in your cabin, complimentary use of binoculars and perhaps even a visit to the ship’s bridge.
