This 8 night, guaranteed departure, escorted tour to Norway and the fjords is ideal for those travelling alone or with friends. It starts and ends in Bergen, taking you into the picturesque fjord region. Day 1: Fly Dublin/Bergen [dinner]. Transfer (pay locally, easy – full details given) to Bergen Børs Hotel. At 7pm meet the tour leader in the lobby. Walk to a nearby restaurant for a 3 course welcome dinner.
Day 2: Bergen [breakfast]. Start the day with a short introductory tour around Bergen on foot. In the afternoon, take a coach to a small local farm just outside Bergen. Learn about Norwegian culture and farm life while enjoying locally produced juice and traditional Norwegian cake. Evening at leisure in Bergen.
Day 3: Bergen – Sognfjord – Geiranger [breakfast, lunch, dinner] After breakfast take the express boat up the Norwegian coast and into the spectacular Sogn Fjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. Pass cascading waterfalls, sheer mountain cliffs, snow-clad peaks and a variety of wildlife. Disembark in Leikanger for a light lunch. In the afternoon, the tour continues by road to Fjaerland, past the Jostedal Glacier (the largest in Europe). Then its on to the Geiranger Skywalk where you will overlook the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage listed Geiranger Fjord with a clear drop of approx 500m and magnificent views of Geiranger. Check in to the Union Hotel Geiranger where you stay for 2 nights, including buffet dinner both evenings.
Day 4: Geiranger [breakfast, dinner]. Morning at leisure to explore the locality or the hotel’s pool and spa area. In the afternoon, enjoy a tour by coach up to “The Eagle’s Road” and the national tourist road, “Road of Trolls”, taking in some of the best scenery the region has to offer.
Day 5: Geiranger – Fjaerland – Balestrand [breakfast, lunch, dinner]. Start the day with a 1 hour ferry cruise on the Geiranger fjord, taking in views of spectacular waterfalls en route. Having disembarked, enjoy a light lunch looking out at the Boyabreen Glacier. After lunch it is a short drive to the Norwegian Glacier Museum before taking a boat down the beautiful Fjaerland Fjord to Balestrand, where you have dinner and stay at the Kviknes Hotel.
Day 6: Balestrand – Naeroy Fjord – Gudvangen – Lofthus [breakfast, dinner]. After breakfast take a ferry to Hella, followed by a scenic tour along the northern side of the Sognfjord. Then it’s another 2 hour ferry crossing on the Sognfjord and the Naeroyfjord. The latter is considered amongst the narrowest and wildest fjords in Norway and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Disembark in Gudvangen, at the head of the Naero Fjord to visit an authentic Viking Village. Then its on to Voss via coach, through the Hardanger Fjord region and Kinsarvik to Lofthus, where you stay in the Hotel Ullensvang for 2 nights half board.
Day 7: Lofthus [breakfast, dinner]. A day at leisure to explore the hotel and surrounding area.
Day 8: Lofthus – Hardangerfjord – Bergen [breakfast, lunch, dinner]. Start the coach journey back to Bergen, stopping en route at an idyllic fruit farm for a short tour followed by lunch. In the afternoon, stop at the Hardanger Aqua Centre for a short visit to the Fish Farm and then on to the new exhibition centre for a deeper introduction to fish farming, which is a huge industry in Norway. The visit includes tasting of different types of salmon. The last stop before reaching Bergen in the late afternoon is the Steindalsfossen, a 50m high waterfall which you can walk behind keeping safe and dry! Enjoy a 5 course farewell dinner at one of Norway’s best seafood restaurants on an island just outside Bergen city after which a ferry takes you back to the mainland for your overnight at Bergen Børs Hotel.
Day 9: Depart Bergen [breakfast] Check out after breakfast and head to the airport for your return flights to Dublin.
