Antarctic Explorer Travel with Hurtigruten
(Go directly to special offers)
Antarctica is different from anything else you will ever experience. A continent enclosed by a cold water current circling a landmass so large that the total area of France, Germany and Spain would fit in – ten times. It is so cold that only two species of vascular plants have found it habitable here. It is covered with a sheet of ice averaging a thickness of more than 2000 meters. There are no permanent human inhabitants but millions of penguins. It is a feeding area for thousands of whales in the Austral summer. Above all, it is a continent dedicated to science and peace. Words simply does not describe the feeling of being on the Great White Continent.
Four of Hurtigruten’s Explorer ships take you as close as possible to Antarctic wildlife and untouched wilderness. Each of the vessels offer a fascinating and varied schedule of landings, all designed to create unforgettable memories. MS Fram carries only 200 guests, while MS Midnatsol, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen carry 500 each. This relatively small passenger size allows Hurtigruten Explorer ships to make landings in some of the most spectacular scenery of the area, following IAATA regulations. MS Fram, as a category 1 vessel, offers the widest possible range of landing sites. Unlike other cruise ships, Hurtigruten’s tender boats launch from the mid-deck, creating smoother, safer and quicker embarkation times.
The Expedition Teams on board each ship are experts in marine biology, arctic survival, oceanography, photography and more, to help make your journey an unforgettable experience. Safety is Hurtigruten’s highest priority. All crew are experts in extreme conditions with years of experience and deep knowledge of the environment.
New Arrivals in 2019 & 2020
Launched in mid-2019, MS Roald Amundsen is the first of two hybrid ships Hurtigruten is adding to its fleet. Her first season in Antarctica will be in Winter 2019-20. She will be followed by her almost identical twin sister, MS Fridtjof Nansen in 2020. Both are state-of-the art expedition ships; quieter, smoother and cleaner than any other. Features on both ships include all outside cabins, 3 specialist restaurants, a large gym, pool and Jacuzzi. Best of all, the ships represents a major step forward for sustainable travel. Their cutting edge hybrid technology mean they will be able to glide almost silently on electric power through pristine waters. The ships are specially constructed for voyages in polar regions and will serve as your advanced base camps at sea.
