Explorer Voyages - Antarctica, Spitsbergen (Svalbard) & Greenland

Antarctica

Antarctica is a land of truly awesome grandeur. The highest, driest, coldest and cleanest continent on Earth, its oceans are unimaginably rich in bird and marine life and its haunting landscapes are unique. Hurtigruten offers six different Antarctic cruise itineraries ranging in length from 12 to 20 days over the following period:

November
Springtime is starting; clean, clear and fresh with few vessels in the area. Penguins heading for their nesting sites, fantastic light conditions and beautiful ice landscape - this period might be the best time to experience Antarctica.

December
Still plenty of snow, 24 hours of daylight, nesting season has started, eggs & penguin chicks, celebration of Christmas and New Year.

January to March
Peak season, lots of penguins and penguin chicks (the chicks are learning to swim). There are few vessels at the end of the season.

Spitsbergen

Remote, mysterious and extreme, the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen - the largest in the Svalbard archipelago - is the European gateway into the High Arctic. It is last stop before the North Pole, further north than Siberia, Alaska and most parts of Greenland.

The island is renowned for its magnificent fjords, calving glaciers and impressive mountains. In this wild and beautiful world animals like reindeer, seal, walrus, arctic fox and polar bears feel at home. You can enjoy all this in the ambience of the midnight sun on a variety of Hurtigruten Svalbard voyages available between July and August.

Greenland

Be spellbound by the contrasts on display in the kingdom of icebergs and Inuits. Choose from Hurtigruten's 9 day or 12 day Greenland cruise itineraries. These voyages which take place during June and July are amongst the most popular and always book up well in advance, so don't delay!

A pristine wilderness of rugged mountains and awe-inspiring fjords, lush green valleys and incredible wildlife, where some of the most active glaciers on Earth and icebergs the size of cathedrals plays out a tableau of breathtaking beauty across a timeless landscape. Blessed with a rich vein of natural and cultural diversity, this spectacular frozen world offers a fascinating insight into a history and culture that has thrived in these harsh realms for millennia.

Greenland’s inland ice cap is more than 14 times the size of England and along the coast the mighty iceberg formations are constantly changing.

In Greenland Hurtigruten's relationship with local partners guarantees you one of the most well-informed and insightful experiences possible. Their ‘safety-first’ landings take you close to Greenland’s fascinating culture and history – to the settlements, sights and places of genuine historical interest. Magnificent natural surroundings form a spectacular backdrop to your voyage.

Through generations the Inuits have formed their own distinctive way of life. Arts & crafts, traditional drum dance, kayak performances and colourful national costumes are all cultural expressions that are very much alive today.
